Mayakovsky lived a revolution on the pulse and thought its large thoughts as personal experience. Wi the Haill Voice fuses public with personal resonance, and constructs its speaking citizen accordingly, finding epic measure for a lyric impulse and dramatising a political alternative to the depersonalised poetic ego deemed appropriate in Eliot's contemporary formulations.
Morgan extends the reasons Jakobson and Kristeva give for remembering Mayakovsky into a class-conscious poetry of republican address. 'To be a bourgeois', Mayakovsky wrote in a draft of his poem '150,000,000':'does not mean to own capital or squander gold. It means a mouth stopped up with fat'. Correspondingly, to be proletarian 'doesn't mean to have a dirty face and work in a factory; it means to be in love with the future that's going to explode the filth of the cellars'.
